The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Well done to the Reception boys and girls for a fantastic show tonight! It was lovely to hear everyone speaking so clearly and singing so beautifully. The warm, positive audience helped us all to relax and give a wonderful performance. I'm sure that all Reception parents are very proud of their children!

Special thanks go to Kimberley and Karen for organizing the beautiful costumes and making popcorn for us to enjoy while we waited for the final song. Thank you, Tone, for the Krispy Cakes and the PTA for the biscuits, apples and juice. Thank you, Jeannine for the face paint idea and helping with the make up.

International Day Fun!

Today was a celebration of the international aspect of our school. We all came to school dressed in clothes or colours that reflect our home countries. We stood up when Ms Yvette called our country and paraded for our friends and parents. Reception then split into 2 groups to visit 4 different countries. In America, we learned about Thanksgiving and made turkey hats. In Holland, we played a game and painted a plate in the delft colours.

At snack time, we all enjoyed a selection of food from our countries. It was fun tasting food from the various countries. We had chin-chin and puff-puff from Nigeria; vaffels from Norway; sausage rolls from Australia; apple pie from Switzerland; prawn crackers, spring rolls and other treats from Malaysia; chocolate chip cookies from America; stroopwafels and cheese from the Netherlands; samoosas from India; cassava chips and rissoles  from Indonesia and puto from the Philippines.

After snack, we visited Canada where we learned some interesting facts. Finally we went to Nigeria, where we found out more about the naira (Nigerian money), Nigerian clothes and food and the Nigerian flag.

Then we all went to the hall to watch dances and listen to songs from Philippines, Indonesia, Spain, Malaysia, Singapore, India and Japan. Our very own Tenbeats consisting of 9 nationalities, played a song for us and finally Elvira and Joshua spoke to us about what it means to be a global citizen. We had so much fun! Well done to Mr Hennie and all the mums and dads who helped to make International Day such a success.

Seeds

We have been learning about plants and their seeds. We know that seeds need water and warmth before they start growing and that plants need soil, water and sunshine to grow. We enjoyed planting our own seeds and are watching them grow. We used bean seeds to create a picture. We made our own books showing the life cycle of a plant. We also made seed packets with seeds to take home.

Happy Birthday!

Natalia celebrated her birthday during the half term and brought us these delicious cakes. Thank you!

Spotted at the Duathlon!

Many Reception children were up bright and early this Saturday morning to take part in the duathlon. Most of the boys and girls ran 1km and cycled on the beach. Thaneesh amazed us all by running 2km! We all received a medal and enjoyed breakfast at the boat club afterwards. Well done, everyone!

Our Nature Walk

We went for a walk around school to look at the plants and flowers that grow in the school gardens. It was interesting to see the many different types of leaves on the plants. We made bark rubbings and picked up leaves and flowers to use in creating our leaf people. We were very creative today!

Plants and Flowers Entry Point

We received a surprise delivery of chrysanthemums from Ms Emma and Mr Hennie with the help of some of the Year 8 girls. They heard that we were learning about Plants and Flowers and thought that we would like some flowers for our classroom.

We spoke about what we knew about plants and flowers. Arthur knows that plants give us oxygen and we know that if we pick flowers they will die. We look forward to learning many more things about plants and flowers in the coming weeks.

We read Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert. We learned that a rainbow has 7 colours, the same amount as there are days in the week. We said a special code word ROYGBIV to help us remember the order of the colours.

We glued paper stems onto paper and used the flowers delivered to us to print flowers in rainbow colours on them. We also played in our Flower Shop. It was a fun day!
